SPECIAL EVENT: RECOVERED VOICES
June 2, 2024
“Undoing injustice, when and where one can, is a moral mandate for all citizens of a civilized world.”
-James Conlon, Artistic Director of The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices
Outlawed. Blacklisted. Imprisoned. Exiled. These words describe three composers — Erwin Schulhoff, Mieczysław Weinberg, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco — whose lives and careers were tragically cut short by the Nazi regime in Europe.
We are honored to present this special collaboration with The Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices and Isaac M. Wise Temple, highlighting works of music by these three important composers. Join us for an unforgettable moment in history as these recovered works are performed under the roof of Plum Street Temple, a spiritual and historic landmark filled with over 150 years of history.
“…the outreach of Recovered Voices has been nothing short of prodigious—live concerts, an extensive audio and video archive, community education programs and more. To date, the music of dozens of almost forgotten composers totaling hundreds of almost forgotten compositions have been unearthed and reintroduced to the world, both murdered composers and those who survived but were silenced, filling a historical void with music of the highest order.” -Bill Haxton (program notes)
